Moving up the ranks to more challenging and prestigious positions is the goal for many of you. These examples of my clients illustrate both Dan’s and Lauren’s desire to rise internally (though both said they would consider outside jobs, too). Dan’s dream was to manage one of the company’s top stores with his eyes set on eventually moving to headquarters to become a key part of the entire chain’s management structure. Dan waited months before the job he wanted opened. Competition among internal store managers was steep. A big salary was the lure that brought hundreds of other managers into the competition. Dan’s resume stood out because he emphasized the accomplishments he achieved. Needless to say, Dan got the job!
In Lauren’s case, she liked challenges and enjoyed learning new things. She created this resume to look for other jobs, but I also encouraged her to pass it on to the company’s top financial people and personnel. She liked her company but was bored with her current position. I told her to be sure that her employer knew exactly all she had done and achieved for them at that position. A new resume did the trick. Her employer took notice. She was promoted twice during the next year.
Walter’s situation was entirely different. He’d attended my seminars and came to see me when he received a 60-day notice that he’d lose his job. He called himself a computer programmer, but during our Goldmining process it became quite clear to me that indeed he had acquired so many on-the-job skills that he exceeded his old job and was in actuality a software engineer. This was quite a realization to him. Software engineers were in serious demand. I coached him to bypass personnel, as eight months of mailing to human resource departments (prior to our meeting) had gotten him no interviews. He followed my advice, dug up some old college friends and alumni, and passed his resume along to them. Within two weeks he got a call from Hewlett-Packard. Not only did they offer him thejob of his dreams, but it also came with a $20, 000 salary increase! When his old employer found out, they came back with a promotion and matched the salary increase. Walter told me that, hands down, it was the most amazing experience of his life. He’d uncovered his true market value and two top companies wanted him; Hewlett-Packard won out. Walter said: “They really listened to my ideas; they wanted to hear my suggestions and improvements. I met some other engineers who worked in similar teams, and they all said HP valued input.” That convinced him. He sold his house and moved to California. Incidentally, he still raves about Hewlett-Packard and his terrific job there.
